We are so glad you are interested in our community support group! We understand that this is a fearful time for creatives. We also understand that being with community is one of the best ways to work through it and take action. That's why we created this group! Below, see the meeting topics for each week with a brief description. We are happy to take suggestions for topics as well, just email supportgroup@gmail.com with the subject line "Community Topic Idea". Please RSVP to each meeting with this link.
It comes at a time of great concern for independent media in the Philippines, as the threat of censorship weighs heavily on our shoulders. You are not alone in this fear—talk it out this Tuesday.
Discuss how this practice, inherited from the colonial era and the Cold War, whereby journalists who don’t adhere strictly to the government line are branded as “subversive” or “reds,” is a threat to our freedom, causing anxiety and heavy feelings. What are your experiences with redtagging?
Recently, our friends, people like Malou Jacob, Rommel B. Rodriguez, Dexter B. Cayanes, Don Pagusara, and Reuel M. Aguila, have been targeted by a government order of red tagging. How did this make you feel?
Community is important in times of crisis. Documentation by the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) and the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) the number of journalists killed in 2022 so far has increased from 2021. Join this Tuesday to build a network of support in the face of threats to our safety.
We will last discuss what we can do for each other, and any other topics that come up.
We will discuss how the #handsoffourlibraries, a movement in response to the increased red tagging movement has impacted us as creatives, and how we can move forward using this momentum.
The state-sponsored crackdown on books is an attempt to "deny the public of much-needed literature and materials encouraging critical thinking and knowledge on Filipino history and language." Come join the community to talk it out! We would love to hear your voice.
